Gezellig

It is one of the favorite words of the Dutch. Literally this word is not translatable and exists only in Dutch. When you consult a dictionary, you can find translations like ‘cosy’ or ‘enjoyable’ in English, ‘agradable’ in Spanish, ‘agréable’ or ‘accueillant’ in French and ‘gemütlich’ in German. But they all can’t really translate the feeling a Dutchman wants to express when he says ‘gezellig’. The Dutch use this word to describe a lot of different things: a person can be ‘gezellig’ (= sociable), but also a certain situation, a room or the ambiance can be ‘gezellig’ (= enjoyable, cosy).

Also 'gezellig' is sometimes used to distinguish the origin of the Dutch person. Which would be either from above or underneath the rivers. This is due to the sound of the 'g' which occurs twice in the word and is pronounced very differently.
