Literally this word is not translatable and exists only in Dutch. When you consult a dictionary, you can find translations like ‘cosy’ or ‘enjoyable’ in English, ‘agradable’ in Spanish, ‘agréable’ or ‘accueillant’ in French and ‘gemütlich’ in German. But they all can’t really translate the feeling a Dutchman wants to express when he says ‘gezellig’. The Dutch use this word to describe a lot of different things: a person can be ‘gezellig’ (= sociable), but also a certain situation, a room or the ambiance can be ‘gezellig’ (= enjoyable, cosy).<br /><br />Also 'gezellig' is sometimes used to distinguish the origin of the Dutch person. Which would be either from above or underneath the rivers.
